Birds drop,
fling seeds. Even they are
in a rush today.

Knox doesn’t need a map
to guide him home
after he dashes off
in pursuit of critters
by himself, all alone.

Crunch of dead leaves
beneath aging feet –
strangely satisfying

Trees, rooted and still,
line the road as cars speed by.
Birds watch from branches.

Brown leaves on gray ground.
Sun rises, birds squawk, dog sniffs,
I shiver and walk.

We’re always looking
for certainty in this
ever-changing world
where the only certain thing
is that it’s ever-changing.

Birds fed at seven.
All food gone by eleven.
Squirrels are in heaven.

A hand reaches out.
Take it in yours. Sometimes that’s
all a person needs.
It can be enough to know
there’s someone there by their side.

Today’s big project –
feed the birds, watch them dine,
a worthy project
anytime, but quite fitting
when you turn seventy nine.
