If only my mind
were as still as the morning
after a long, rainy night.

If only my mind
were as still as the morning
after a long, rainy night.

In a lush field of possibilities
a gateless fence of doubt
and fear pens us in.
The ground is bare and hardened
by our anxious pacing … until
one day we realize
the fence is self-constructed
and we begin the slow,
hard work of disassembling.

Every year we shape
that tree to our liking
and every year we enjoy
a brief success…then,
that stubborn tree
reclaims the shape
it wants to be.

From the birds’ early
morning broadcast system we
get a wakeup call.

Come,
join me in a joyful flight.
put your chores and woes away,
for the moment soar and play.
Leave your troubles on the ground,
sip the nectar all around,
listen to the flowers sing.
Who knows what the morrow brings?

It’s
not
a
race
to
fall,
but
some
leaves.
have
already
begun.

Every now and then
a song reaches out and grabs us,
takes us to another time,
another place, and once again
we’re in a friend’s basement
rockin’ to “Let’s Go To The Hop”.
JDG
The dull roar of cars –
going somewhere,
going fast.
What if what we’re looking for
can be found within?

Knox keeps looking at me
trying to understand
why I never chase squirrels,
race around with a stick in my mouth
or enjoy rolling in wet grass.

Do you think trees question
their right to take root,
to branch out, to leaf,
to glisten in the sun,
to drop their leaves
when the days grow
short and cold?
Maybe we could learn
to question less.
Maybe we could learn
to live more like trees.
