When Words Fail

“Words fail me.” That old

cliché says it all and says

it well as I search

for words to describe this spring’s

 vibrant greens. I’m left

with a taunt ringing in my

ears, “A picture’s worth

a thousand words.” I guess it’s

time to lay down my

old familiar pen and get

out another medium.

Something To Dance About

Seeing those ravens

dance among the buttercups

as that cardinal calls

the tune, I smile even

 though the day is wet

and gray. They found something to

dance about and so can I.

Love Showers

The day is bathed in

sunshine and new green, nature’s

sweet offering to

the bride-to-be. Friends join with

family and we

mark what’s both timeless and new –

the joyful promise of love.

Wasp Ways

I should have known when

the bees come, the wasps can’t be

far behind. Standing

there, admiring the bees,

I was threatened by

a wasp who was none too pleased

to see me enjoying bees.

For A Magic Moment

Caught up in early

evening chores, I almost missed

the magenta streak of sky

as the sun fell through

the lace of budding trees. Too

soon the splendor passed,

but for a magic moment

beauty crowned the end of day.

Poetic Reflections

“I would have written

a shorter poem if I

had more time,” she said

and I knew at once

she spoke true. I remember,

too, the advice I

once was given: “Write your poem,”

I was told, “and when

you come to a line that seems

especially fine, strike it out.”

April Rain

Following the lead

of the grassy hills, the trees

suggest more green’s to

come. If this April rain keeps

 up, the grass will soon

be as tall as trees and we’ll

be rowing our boats to work.

May I Have Your Attention Please

That bold cardinal, high

in the tree, had something to

say and say it he

did repeatedly. I paused

and, smiling, heard

him out. What he intended

to convey, I don’t

know, but he stopped my thoughts, paused

my steps, and turned me toward home.

Gold Enough

Daddy’s daffodils,

forsythia planted by

an unknown hand, sun

streaming upon a pond grown

still  – all these hold gold

enough to fill the emptied

coffers of a weary soul.

It’s Not Just Us

Contorting herself

to get to the greener grass

on the other side

of the fence, that large black cow

dined well, even though

the grass on her own side was

flourishing and just as green.
