When The Sun Shines Full

When the sun shines full

in the clearest of skies on

this cold winter day,

May I not turn to

thoughts of cloudy, sun-less days

of another time.

May I stand, instead, with arms

outstretched and embrace

this one perfect moment of

this one cloudless, perfect day.

A Bit Of Nonsense

A bit of nonsense

is better than none, or so

I tell myself  when

the kids’ silliness won’t stop

and I’m about to

blow my top. A gaggle of

giggles sure beats tears

though high-pitched whinnying and

loud guffaws do give me pause.

First Fire

Even though the house

is already warm, season’s

first fire chases

away another kind of

cold as old and young,

cats and dogs, grouchy and glad

gather around together.

Cat Comfort

Though more comfortable

places surely can be found,

my cat edges her

way onto my lap, plops down

and begins to knead.

 It doesn’t matter to her,

as she lies there and

purrs, that I was otherwise

  occupied; nor does

she know her presence lulls my

busy mind and brings me rest.

Autumn Uncertainties

An impatient wind

sends leaves shivering across

cold ground, yet the sun

keeps watch in a calm, blue sky.

 A foreshadowing…

A harbinger…Or maybe

just Autumn’s mixed metaphor.

Balm From Barrie

“I’m not young enough,”

J.M. Barrie said, ” to know

everything.”  I take

comfort from his words living

as I do with two

eye-rolling teenagers and

a preteen still in training.

Eyeing Aging

I know I’m way past

my prime, but when I hear my

son refer to his

doctor as a Teen Titan

of pubescent fame,

I know it won’t be long til

this mommy becomes mummy.

A Little Learning

Every day I learn

something new. Today I found

an emoticon

to express a crappy mood.

Pointed and brown with

no grin, it sends a message

soft but clear: “Step wide

and aside.” On certain days

perhaps I’ll wear one

on my shoulder instead of

the more commonly found chip.

Big Question, Tiny Folk

What lured that tiny

tree frog from his home and set

him adventuring,

making him easy prey to

sharp-eyed birds and cats?

Was he answering

curiosity’s siren

call or hoping for

trees fuller and more green where

he might meet and wed his queen?

The Dalai Lama, The Mosquito, And Me

When I start to think

nothing I can do will make

a real difference,

the Dalai Lama’s words come

back to me, “If you

think you are too small  to make

a difference, try

sleeping with a mosquito.”

Thank you, Dalai Lama sir.

The divine in me

greets the divine in you and

in that mosquito too.
