Sometimes we look down
when things are looking up
because it didn’t happen fast enough.

Sometimes it’s a choice,
but for me it’s mostly not.
Surrender is not easy
when you’re used to holding on,
but puzzling as it is
loss can be a gain.

Dreams shared, stories told
as friends gather
to feed the soul.

I can’t stop the war without.
I’m just a small loop in a much larger chain.
I’ll turn to the war within,
to those endless battles of judgement and despair.
In reaching out to those inner foes,
I’ll take a step toward peace,
and from there, who knows what will unfold.

Just outside my door
Knox whines. Is he praying
I will listen and let him run outside?
Is he praying he will finally catch a squirrel?
Outside my door
a man runs. Is he running to
or from? What’s he running for? Is he praying
this will be enough to get him what he’s looking for?
And as for me?
I watch and write – a poem?
a prayer? or just a bit of light?

I was so busy
visiting yesterday, I
barely had time for today.

Alone
in an empty room,
a hand touches mine.

Sunday stillness slides
gently inside and softly
rests for a moment.

With the birdseed in place
the show begins, but
it soon takes a turn
when squirrels storm the stage.
What began as a homespun tale
becomes an action packed drama
until Knox rushes in and saves the play.

Try though it might, the wind couldn’t
shake sunlight from the trees
or uproot the grass though
it did have some fun with the trash.
