A tiny bit of wonder
climbed into my lap today
and softly began to purr,
but things got tricky when
Knox decided to join.
Purrs turned to hisses
and Knox, looking perplexed,
slowly backed away.
It seems ” I was here first “
had the final say.

I left the windows
of my mind open and gusts
of compassion swept in.

When resistance is strong
and the two year old within
says no, no, no, I’ve learned
not to plead or push.
I hold out my hand and start
to sing and soon we’re
dancing to the same song.

Among the shadows
and the light, hummingbirds
sip the nectar that’s flowers’ gift.
The squirrels and other birds
dine on the gift of birdseed that’s mine.

I think to myself
everything goes.
Hummingbirds visit for a while
as do daisies and buttercups.
Green leaves yield to red and gold
leaving bare branches to weather the cold.
Soon the branches get covered with snow
and before long the snow, too, goes.
That double rainbow that brought such delight
only lingered for a while.
Everything goes, I tell myself
as you slowly pull away,
but some return
and even when they don’t
memories remain
until the one remembering
also slips away.

There’s an occasional squabble.
but mostly they work things out,
those squirrels and birds at the feeder.
I’ve seen one bird pick up a seed
and feed it to another, though I’ve never
seen a squirrel feed a bird or even
its squirrel brother. Still, you’d think
if birds and squirrels can work
things out, we could too.

If I hadn’t stumbled,
I would have continued,
lost in thought,
and failed to see
the sunlight glistening
on that tiny purple flower.

Determined to finish our walk
in spite of the rain,
Knox and I picked up our pace.
Reaching our goal, we turned around
and headed home.
Only then did I see, high in the sky,
the double rainbow I couldn’t see before.
I gazed at the sky, Knox at the grass,
until we arrived home soaked in raindrops
and filled with delight.

The world spins.
Nothing holds.
Be patient.
Gather breath.
The world spins.
Nothing holds.
Exhale stillness.
Exhale light.
The world spins.
Nothing holds.
Describe the waves.
Turn a poem.
The world spins.
Nothing holds.

(A poem inspired by a prompt from my friend, Barbara Outland)
Flowers receive hummingbird’s song,
offer sweet nectar to him.
I watch, enthralled.
For a moment
all’s right with the world.
