Birds open their wings to fly.
If we’d open our hearts and minds,
there’s no telling where we’d fly or
even how high. Why not give it a try?

The pink impatiens
couldn’t bear to stop blooming.
After a brief pause,
knowing they’d have to hurry,
they left us a parting gift.

No seed is left behind.
My parents must have reminded
the squirrels and birds
about all those starving squirrels
and birds in China.

Peeking through branches
now bare of leaves, sun and moon
conspire to fill
the emptiness, not with leaves,

A few leaves still cling
to the only home
they’ve ever known.
Like us, they resist
letting go even though
it’s clear “the times
they are ‘a-changing’.”

One paw out the door
before Knox notices it’s
raining. He pauses.
Upon consideration,
he decides business can wait.

Pausing for starlings
as they leisurely make their way
across roads and fields.

Upon arising
I saw several birds,
perched on the seedless
porch rail, watching me.
Apparently they hoped I’d
open my eyes, see their plight,
and make things right
