I watched them watch each other –

this young girl and her beau –

each hoping to see in the other

the joy they felt themselves

as they planned their Valentines.

Smiles mingled with gentle tears as

they saw their hopes fulfilled.

The joy and smiles were theirs; 

the joy and tears were mine.
