Learning To Walk

I never learned to walk in the dark.

I want to learn now.

When I was little, I lay alone at night,

afraid of monsters and ghosts,

wondering what would become of me,

what would become of those I loved.

I never learned to walk in the dark.

I want to learn now.

I hid myself away, seeking out closets

where I could lie still,

thinking if I were just still enough,

trouble would pass on by.

I never learned to walk in the dark.

I want to learn now.
