Sitting in silence,

watching the birds come and go,

seeing the tree leaves quiver,

I feel my small world world

grow much bigger.

I got to sleep late

and even though all the pets

were fed, they were uneasy

with this change and made frequent

bedside visits to see if I was ok.

Although it was a bit annoying,

I am grateful for their care.

When I began replaying

a negative exchange from

months ago, an amused

inner voice interrupted with

” ‘Enough’ , wasn’t that your word

for this year? You could begin

applying it right now, right here. “

As the sun slides over

the horizon, the porch rail

is bare of seed and birds,

but when the seed is finally spread,

the porch erupts in song.

Crescent moon looks down

on pink-tinged sky

and prepares for

her daily goodbye.

Soft spoken truth

speaks louder

than shouted lies.

Gentling my thoughts,

I soften my gaze and watch

the sun slowly rise.

It’s going to be a good day.

Information can come

from a variety of places

but I’m slowly learning

I have an inside source,

and if I listen to my body

it might not have to yell at me.

They tried to tell me,

those early rising birds,

that the day would go smoother

if I joined them in song.

As I opened my mouth

to sing along , I heard

a low groan, “Oh no… please,

not another crow.”

Though often unnoticed,

breath is our constant companion

until the last. It’s with us in good times

and bad giving us the energy

we need. Let’s take a few minutes

to honor the remarkable gift it is.
