The sun, holding nothing back, casts its light
on all below
and we give
thanks, but
when
glare
blinds and
heat grows strong
we are grateful
for soft clouds and their gentle tempering.

To savor anything, go slow… go slow.
Even reading
poems must
not be
rushed.
Take
one small
bite, feel each
syllable in
your mouth. Don’t swallow them whole. Slow, go slow.

Is my response likely to enhance my
life or the lives
of others,
short term
or
long?
A good
question, but
if I don’t pause,
once that old amygdala’s sprung, I’m done.

At this very moment when all is well
in my small world,

shoplift
from
that
vast store
of other
times and other
places when my small world was out of joint.

Today I drive toward a horizon of
light. If I were
driving the
other

I want to appreciate what’s newly
green in me and
in others.
I want
to
be
careful
to give this
young growth what it
needs and not judge it by what’s fully grown.

Sheltered among the shining pines, small drops
left over from
last night’s rain
scatter
light,
much
as sad
memories
sometimes linger
yet simultaneously scatter light.

Self-created suffering made easy:
believe the worst
of others
and of
your
self,
don’t count
your blessings,
let things fester,
repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.

I’m going to start a diminishment chart.
I figure it’s
the least I
can do
to
keep
track of
mine and see,
once and for all,
if it is really true that less is more.

So – in America we have newscasts
on how best to
respond if
we’re caught
in
a
public
shooting, but
not on what to
do if held hostage by the gun lobby.
