Some nights the winter fairies come dusting
everything with
white, lending
a wee
bit
of
magic
to a day
begun in grey,
adding enough to chase the blues away.

What to do when I’m half-way through and I’m
already done?
From what source
can I
draw
when
little
energy
remains? Friendships
hold living water and from them I drink.

As evening fell so did, at last, the snow.
Throughout the day
we waited,
adults
and
kids,
looking
for a glimpse
of falling white.
Now that it’s here, some moan while others cheer.

It’s a small lake, a pond really, but such
a place of peace.
Just one look
and I
fill
my
emptied
cup back up
and pause before
I lift it to my lips and drink my fill.

Even in this winter season as she
rests, Mother Earth
nurtures and
consoles,
makes
space
for all
her creatures
at her ample
breast, though some push and tug, scrambling for more.

Christmas Cactus, prickly but lovely still,
gives me hope that
others will
look past
all
that’s
prickly
and find some
loveliness in
me this wild and crazy winter season.

What about the wisdom aging was to
bring? As the knees
grow weaker
and hair
turns
gray,
you’d think
a few pearls
would come my way.
Instead there’s just the same, but older, me.

Chilled by winter winds but warmed by thoughts of
three young girls, all
winter born
but with
hearts
of
summer,
I bask in
their stories and
the music they bring this cold December.

Silver glazed trees glisten in the grey light
of an icy
morning. I
slow down
and
share
the sight
with raven,
deer and squirrel.
Content, I head on down the road to work.

Who would have thought if we kept diving deep
beneath ocean’s
rough surface,
beyond
dark
thoughts
and through
unwanted
murky feelings
we would come to rest on such peaceful sand ?
