While Knox is rounding up
the squirrels, a family of deer
slip by, glad to see
he’s preoccupied.

While Knox is rounding up

Evertime I see the burst
of small green branches
newly sprung from the stump
which once was our beloved cherry tree,
a burst of gratitude springs from me.
I bow, thankful that,
in spite of everything,
she has chosen to persist.
JDG
That tree grew beyond
its resources and limb by
limb it began to let go.
JDG
Decided to walk
and read the land and sky. I’ll
read the newspaper later.
JDG
Decided to skip
my walk this morning, but Knox
would have none of it.
Reluctantly I put on my shoes
and stepped outside into
an unexpected coolness,
glad my yes-saying buddy
refused to take no for an answer.
JDG
Glad you’re living your
dream. I can’t help wondering
what happened to mine.
JDG
What I do matters,
but how I do it
matters even more.
JDG
A tiny bit of wonder
climbed into my lap today
and softly began to purr,
but things got tricky when
Knox decided to join.
Purrs turned to hisses
and Knox, looking perplexed,
slowly backed away.
It seems ” I was here first “
had the final say.
JDG
I left the windows
of my mind open and gusts
of compassion swept in.
JDG
When resistance is strong
and the two year old within
says no, no, no, I’ve learned
not to plead or push.
I hold out my hand and start
to sing and soon we’re
dancing to the same song.
