All around the globe

people argue 

and birds sing.

The sun is trying

its best, but it’s up against

a fierce opponent who seems

coldly determined to win.

We’re grateful for all the light

the sun brings to this challenging fight.

Knox looks up at me

as if to say, “It’s cold out here

and my business is done.

Let’s go inside and have some fun.”

In the icy chill

of early morning, the birds

gather, hoping to be fed.

 The indoor cats remind me

they too are hungry 

and in need of food. 

The sun has not yet risen,

but the day begins.

I’ll know I’ll have reached

an altered state when 

I don’t make a big fuss

over small things.

Seeing that soaring

splash of red lifts my spirit

so I can soar too.

That bluejay arrived

late for his morning meal

and shook his head

in puzzlement when

not a seed remained

for him to eat.

JDG

The birds weren’t the only ones

with ruffled feathers.

Spending so much time

inside and together

resulted in some ruffled feathers

among frustrated  family members 

who wished they could fly.
