Skimming the surface

of the sun spattered pond, small

boat, untethered, floats.

Defying darkness,

fireflies sub for stars on

this cloud-covered night.

The air’s alive with

flying things celebrating

rain’s end, sun’s return.

Raindrops make tiny

circles on the porch as birds

search for fallen seed.

Yellow butterfly

mingles with purple blossoms,

captures heart and eye.

So far the flowers

shrug off the cold, knowing it’s

simply March’s way.

Just for a moment,

sky and pond are brushed with pink

before night descends.

Breeze, leaves and light put

on a sparkling show for all

who choose to attend.

Bare limbs etched against

 red sky as the day comes to

 a fiery end.
