forsythia begins to

sing Spring’s welcoming.

No cold snap this – more

like an icy thunderbolt

through frosted branches – promise

of cold, shining light.

Purple fingers stroke

the horizon – sun’s

surprising farewell.

Ever-expanding

raindrops dot the pond – nature’s

pointillistic piece.

The sky’s a pastel

swirl as day bids goodbye on

this long solstice night.

The smell of wood smoke
