and those few red leaves still cling
to their mother’s limbs.

Having shed autumn
leaves, trees deck themselves out in
scintillating ice.

Lit with morning light,
frost-covered hills contribute
sparkle to day’s start.

Now that fog has gone,
sun sets the trees atwinkle
in the morning light.

So much beauty can
be hard to hold, thus the trees
quietly let go.

The day slipped out of
its grey overcoat and donned
a golden sweater.

Autumn’s complexion,
even though ruddy and rough,
has a golden glow.

Autumn’s dash of spice
brightens bland spirits, restores
color to pale cheeks.

Surrounded by gold,
at least for a time, we rest
in fulsome beauty.
