Before I occupied my body
and watched that jeweled hummingbird
bury himself in a small blue blossom,
I was off somewhere,
lost in a cloud of concern.

A stranger went out of his way
to help me today.
Interestingly,
his name was Adam –
a contemporary first man.

When stressed out
let’s turn in
and find sanctuary,
naming
what we’re grateful for.

Lying there
on the crisp white sheet,
the poem silently pleads,
“Come fill me with your breath.
I’m lying here, alone, unread.”

As evening falls,
the sun sets
the pond aflame –
elemental
drunkenness

Taking it easy,
that squirrel, that dove,
lie down to eat,
leaving me to ponder
their recent display of sloth.

Leaping from rail
to branch to trunk,
squirrels perform
their acrobatic routine.
The jays are not impressed.

After endless days
of heat and rain
come cooler days
and smiling sun.
Fall’s around the bend.

Within each of us
lies layers of lead
and layers of gold
Let’s acknowledge the lead
and mine the gold.
