Halloween previews

with all their ghosts and goblins

are playing every 

moment these pre-election

days, giving us quite a fright.

Small blessings sometimes

come in furry bundles of

barking joy though

the squirrels would disagree.

Openings allow light

 to pour forth from 

hearts, minds, and  sky.

Unfortunately, the same

can’t always be said

for mouths

Hanging by a thread,

that small spider wove its web

undaunted by onlookers.

The cats went crazy

when they looked out the window

and saw a bunny

eating bird seed on the porch.

Will those pesky deer be next?

Knox tried to explain

in his own doggy way

with tail wags and barks,

but when I failed to understand,

he placed his head upon my knees

and let out a long and soulful howl.

Around here everyone

has an opinion:

cats, dogs, birds,

and grandkids.

I’m learning to listen

and forbear.

than those spoken

by a four year old boy

when his grandmother visited:

” Now our family is complete.”

I searched for answers. Now I

can’t remember the questions.

Their heyday over,

pink impatiens start to shed,

one by one, their leaves.
