There’s an occasional squabble.
but mostly they work things out,
those squirrels and birds at the feeder.
I’ve seen one bird pick up a seed
and feed it to another, though I’ve never
seen a squirrel feed a bird or even
its squirrel brother. Still, you’d think
if birds and squirrels can work
things out, we could too.

Although I haven’t seen squirrels feed each other, one morning I watched a squirrel gardener scurrying back and forth grabbing one seed at a time from the ground beneath the feeders, planting it somewhere in the yard, and then scurrying back for another. S/He kept at it for a very long time. Only some of the seeds grew into sunflowers in unanticipated places, but they feed bees and butterflies, and eventually, they’ll feed other squirrels. Ah, the gifts of nature. Thank you for sharing them in your poetry, Joan.
